Lena Dunham to Write a Four-Issue Archie Storyline

Archie had a big weekend, announcing that Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa has been named as their new Chief Creative Officer as well as several other bits and pieces. Sacasa is now best known for writing Afterlife with Archie, a series which take a decidedly adult approach to the Archie universe by throwing in some zombies.

(And as it’s a violent, non-canon universe, incidentally, I’d say Afterlife with Archie also enjoys the power of being able to resolve several of the mysteries and never-spoken-aloud hints of the central Archie concept. That’s got to be part of the appeal, too).

But anyway, Archie have also announced that Sacasa’s first move is to invite writer and actress Lena Dunham to write a four-issue story for Archie in 2015. Dunham is a known comics fan, and has spoken of her love for Archie in the past. In fact, look, she did so again only a month ago.

In an interview with CBR, he says of her involvement

We sent her a box of tons of Archie books, she devoured them all, and maybe a week or two later came back with her pitch. I’m not going to spoil it, but it’s really, really funny. It’s incredibly contemporary. It’s a classic Archie story, with a definitely unique, Lena spin, and it’s going to be set in Archie continuity

Dunham is starting to get a little typecast from her HBO series Girls, which centres around several somewhat unlikeable lead characters. It’ll be interesting to see her stretch away from that and write the complete opposite: the likeable, friendly, non-threatening world of Archie.

So! Interesting developments coming from Archie over the next year or two. And to celebrate, here’s a Girls piece from artist Dan Parent:
