Gene Luen Yang Shares his Top Ten Asian Pacific American Comics Characters

Gene Luen Yang, the writer/artist best known for his recent project ‘Boxers and Saints’ for FirstSecond, has taken to tor.com to offer a look at his choices for the top ten Asian Pacific American comics characters. A Chinese-American creator himself, his list offers a look at what the last few decades have offered in terms of comics diversity.

Alongside choices like Marvel’s Amadeus Cho (created by Asian American writer Greg Pak and Asian Canadian artist Takeshi Miyazawa) and Jubilee are a few more lower-profile characters, including Nancy Kim from Derek Kirk Kim’s graphic novel ‘Same Difference’. It’s a fascinating list, not least because it shows a range of characters with different personas, lives, and interests. Asian-American characters are still relatively underserved by the comics industry, but the fact there’s such a diversity in personality-types in this list is at least a promising sign that the characters we DO have are being done well.

The comments section is also worth a look, as several other high-profile Asian-American characters are suggested, including Nico Minoru from Runaways and Jimmy Woo.

And while we’re at it, we’d be remiss if we didn’t point out that Yang’s next project The Shadow Hero, illustrated by Sonny Liew, is due for release this year!
