Raina Telgemeier’s ‘Sisters’ to Launch with 200,000 Print Run

ICV2 report that Raina Telgemeier’s next book, the Scholastic-published ‘Sisters’, is to launch with a run of 200,000 copies. This is, firstly, an absolutely huge print run.

For contrast, the bestselling comic of January this year was Batman, which shipped 115,000. Telgemeier has quickly risen to become one of the most important comic creators in the industry, with her previous project Smile being an extraordinary critical and commercial success. Chronicling her childhood, the book proved to be a hit with all-ages and spent several months in the New York Times bestseller list. Sisters is a sequel of sorts to that book, detailing the time spent growing up with her younger sister.

So this is all pretty big news, really. It’s not often that a comic cracks 100,000 sales, let alone twice that figure – and for the book in question to be a creator-owned project, featuring non-franchise characters, and targeted at an all-ages audience? Unheard of. Well, unheard of since Telgemeier’s last book, at least. There’s hope yet for comics!

Sisters will be published in August.
