Dynamite to Reprint Shaft Novels, Publish new Shaft Comics

Dynamite made several announcements at the BEA festival this weekend, most of them announcing collaborations with novelists I’ve never heard of. One announcement which did catch the attention, however, was the news that Dynamite have acquired the rights to the Shaft franchise, and will be republishing the original Shaft novels by writer Ernest Tidyman.

On top of that, the company say that they’ll also be soon announcing some all-new Shaft stories, in the form of prose stories – and some original graphic novels.

Made most famous by Richard Rowntree in several gamechanging blaxploitation movies across the 1970s – and a subsequent TV spin-off – Shaft is a private detective from Harlem who takes on corruption around the world, wooing ladies and dealing justice on anybody who gets in his way. Interestingly enough, the final Shaft novel from Tidyman kills off the character – presumably the new stories will be set prior to that novel, then.

Dynamite promise more news on the return of Shaft later in the year.
