Becky Cloonan, Brenden Fletcher and Karl Kerschl Open ‘Gotham Academy’

DC’s October solicitations are on the way, which means we’re now getting our first look at the new comics that’ll be coming out in Autumn. And today sees Entertainment Weekly – you know, that website which won’t pay their writers anymore – announcing one of the most exciting things DC have been involved with for years. Maybe centuries.

Becky Cloonan, Brenden Fletcher and Karl Kerschl will be the creative team for a book called Gotham Academy. Set in a school founded and paid for by Bruce Wayne, the series will focus on the pupils as they grow up in literally the world city in the history of fiction.

And snog each other! There’ll be snogging, as promised in the press release:

Welcome to GOTHAM ACADEMY! Gotham City’s most prestigious prep school is a very weird place. It’s got a spooky campus, oddball teachers, and rich benefactors always dropping by…like that weirdo Bruce Wayne. But nothing is as strange as the students!

Like, what’s up with Olive Silverlock? Is she crazy or what? Where did she go last summer? And what’s the deal with her creepy mom? And how come that Freshman MAPS is always following her around? Is she still going out with Kyle? P.S. did you hear the rumor about the ghost in the North Hall?

GOTHAM ACADEMY, written by Eister-Award-nominated Becky Cloonan (DEMO) along with Brenden Fletcher and illustrated by Karl Kerschl, arrives on October 1st. It’s a new, monthly teen drama set in the shadow of Batman and the craziness of Gotham City with new characters and old plus a secret tie to Gotham’s past…

Cloonan is the big draw here, being a prominent artist who recently branched out with a trio of acclaimed self-published comics which she wrote and drew. But the rest of the creative team are strong too, with the Eisner-nominated Kerschl (for The Abominable Charles Christopher) drawing the series and the cover above, I believe. Fletcher I’m less familiar with – but on his twitter he’s been hinting about a new project alongside Cameron Stewart! So it looks like he’s going to be exploding across comics this year like some kind of celestial supernova.

The book seems like a deliberate attempt from DC to court a wider audience than the much mocked “45 year old male” demographic they allegedly once said they wanted. There’s also a 100% chance that somebody will wear chain mail in this comic, so that’s exciting too.

It all seems pretty exciting, really. “Goth Academy”, as I’m insistent it will be nicknamed, will begin in October. Expect more details down the line.
