Sloths Inevitably Cause Humanity’s Downfall in New Miniseries ‘Memetic’ from James Tynion IV and Eryk Donovan

Boom Studios continue their press release-enabled reign of terror this week with the announcement of ‘Memetic’, a three-issue miniseries from the creative team of James Tynion IV and Eryk Donovan.

A cross between 24, The Net, and David Attenborough documentaries, the miniseries covers the course of 72 hours – with each oversized issue lasting the course of a day. By the time we reach the end of the final issue, the countdown to the end of the world hits zero hour, and civilisation crashes. What causes this?

Sloths. Weaponised sloths. Digital, weaponised sloths.

As you may have inferred from the title, the series revolves around the first – and last – ‘weaponised meme’. A video is released online which, although it looks like a silly animal video which’ll pass a few minutes of time, turns out instead to be a deadly weapon which crumbles society and sends the world heading towards catastrophe.

Yeah. It’s weird. That’s why I had to write about it. Because when you offer a satire on the state of social media, the key to selling it to me? Bung a sloth in it somewhere. Who doesn’t love a sloth? I’m talking about sloths too much aren’t I.

Memetic’s first issue will be published by Boom in October.
