Every Panel Ever: Panel One

What’s the best way to get people interested in comics? Show them some comics. Every day The Spire will be posting a comics panel, with the ultimate goal of one day having posted every single panel which has ever been written, drawn, edited, inked, coloured, and lettered. We’ll start with the really good panels, of course – and I’ll share where you can find the comic in full.

I figured I’d better start this daily feature with some of the big guns, and by ‘big guns’ I of course mean ‘Judge Dredd’s Punching Muscles’. I’m giving you the context behind it, but the panel we’re all really focused on is the fourth.

Probably the most famous sequence in the history of Judge Dredd, this comes at the climax of ‘Judge Death Lives’, which established that Dredd’s worst enemy was actually just one of four malevolent spirits out there. Judge Fear has a gate on his helmet which opens to reveal his true visage – a sight which makes everybody who sees it go mad with fear.

Everybody but Dredd, that is, who takes a second and then dishes out an appropriate response. This was the story which really cemented Dredd’s legend, and led to a blockbuster run of storylines from the creative team. It’s also a brilliantly simple composition from artist Brian Bolland, who throws the weightiest punch in comics history.

Taken from ‘Judge Death Lives’ by John Wagner, Alan Grant, and Brian Bolland. You can find the full story collected in ‘Judge Dredd Casefiles, Vol 5.
