Action Comics #1 Sells for Over $3 Million

Action Comics #1 is the very first appearance of Superman, and much of his supporting cast – it’s got Lois Lane being unbelievably, wonderfully vain and objectionable, a bunch of confused and useless gangsters, and many of the foundations which have kept comics aloft for the next seventy years. Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel worked wonders.

Only 30 copies are believed to remain in existence – DC Comics have one, as revealed by Scott Snyder on Instagram recently. But the one that went to auction this year is believed to be by far the finest quality copy of the comic on the face of the Earth. It’s been rated a 9.0 by the Certified Guaranty Company – no, I have no idea what guaranty means either – and sold for the highest price ever for an auctioned comic, at a price of $3.2 million.

Whoa now. The last time a copy was auctioned, it hit $2.16 million – and who says comics collecting is worthless?Importantly in this case, though, a proportion of the money will be donated to the Christopher and Dana Reeve foundation, a thoroughly worthy cause.
