Sonny Liew’s biography of Charlie Chan Hock Chye, which doubles as a biography for the last few decades of Singapore as a whole, will be published by Pantheon Books, presumably later this year.
This huge project from Liew tracks the life of the comics creator across several years, and incorporates much of his original artwork into Liew’s story pages. It looks like it’s been a huge undertaking for Liew, who seems to push forward with each of his new projects to create something bigger and tougher than the one before. The description of the book reads:
With a career spanning more than five decades, from pre-independent Singapore through its three Prime Ministers, Chan’s work reflects the changing political and economic environment in Singapore. Containing Chan’s original illustrations, painting and sketches, this is a groundbreaking work and labour of love aimed at recapturing the portrait of an artist.
In his blog post announcing the pick-up, Liew notes that Singapore will be first to get hold of the book – Epigram will be publishing it over there, at some point during the first half of this year.
